So a couple days ago my RTM (remember the milk) pro account expired on me. Normally I would just shell out the $25 bucks and go on, but with it so close to Christmas and my NYC trip, I really don’t want to spend any more then necessary right now, even though I do use it daily and I believe it is worth the cost.

However, as I was looking for a cheaper alternative. I noticed that RTM had a mobile version of there site. But even more importantly, I noticed that the push notifications from the RTM app were still coming through everyday. Now if I open the actual app I get a pro account required screen and get booted out, but to me the popup notifications is what I use the app for.

So, for all you iPhone/iPod-Touch users out there, all you need to do is download the RTM app from the app store, setup a trial account. Get the setting just the way you want them, use the app during the trial, then switch to the mobile version once your trial runs out. I also recommend creating a shortcut to the mobile version on your iPhone/iPod-Touch home screen. If you call it the same name as the RTM app it will have the same icon (see images below). After that I just moved the RTM app icon to my last home screen page and all is well and I get to keep my $25 bucks for my trip.

It seems like almost every carrier is doing a top 5 (some even 10) list. With these lists they allow you to add 5 to 10 “friends”and no matter what carrier/provider they use, you can call for free and not waste any of your minutes. They all seem to have their own little names. AT&T calls it the “A-List” and Verizon calls it “My Fave Five”. But in the end it’s all the same.

Most of you are thinking, yeah, we know this already, but as I was changing some setting in my beloved Google Voice account I noticed that they allow you to change the number that appears when you received a call from someone. You can have either their number display, which is of course the default and what most people would want. But they also allow you to always have the google voice number show up with every call.

So my workaround is why not just add your google voice number to your top 5 list and give everyone that number. Then change it so that all incoming calls come from your google voice number and never waste your minutes on incoming calls again.

But thats not all, google voice allows you to make outgoing as well, by calling your google voice number, then dialing the number you want to call. So no wasting minutes on outgoing calls either.

Okay, now I know for some of you this just wont work. A lot of us love to always know who is calling before we answer the phone, but google helps with this as well. Google Voice give you control of what numbers you want to ring straight through, but it also give you the ability to have callers announce themselves first and/or just announce their number or name (if in contacts) and then gives you the ability to answer or send to voicemail.

Also, keep in mind you can still give out your real number to the other 4 in your list and anyone else who is worth wasting your minutes on. This workaround is meant to be given out to all those that call you constantly and love to talk for hours or perfect as a business line.

If you think this is something you could really use and want to give it a shot, I have 2 Google Voice invites to give out just leave a comment below and I will pick 2 at random and send out the invites later this week. Just be sure to add the tag “I want an Invite” to the beginning or end of your comment.

Before I start it all out though, I wanted to give all of you a heads up on some of the topics.

They include:

A newer Google product and how you can use it to save money.

A hack on your iPhone that you may never use, but if you need it, its amazing!

Using a popular task managing service for free with the benefits of the paid account

and a couple others…

Along with those, I will also be posting my thoughts of MonoPrice’s iPhone/iPod battery backup and I plan to end out the week with a topic I don’t normally post about, but one I plan to do more of in the future.

Along with all that, I also plan to start working on a redesign of the blog and get my priorities straight with where I want it to go and what I want it to be about. Hopefully all this will help me keep up a daily post (or more) schedule.

So, keep an eye out later today for the first post and I hope you will enjoy this week as much as I plan too.

Be sure to let me know what you think with comments and/or emails.

So MacHeist is at it again, but this time it miniaturized and free. Before I begin I do want to mention that I did actually participated in the last MacHeist. There were a couple apps, that I wanted to have and a couple I wanted to try out so, I figured might as well. Overall, I have been pretty happy with my purchase. I don’t use the apps all that much, but at the same time I don’t regret the purchase.

This time they are offering 5 apps for free and a 6th app free when they reach 500,000 participants. The total value of the nanoBundle is $154 bucks. So you may be thinking wow, free?, I gotta have this, just as I was when I first heard about it. But then I took a look at the apps they are offering.

Here are the apps:

ShoveBox

Catch all the little scraps of information that you can’t immediately act on, but don’t want to forget. ShoveBox sits up in your menu bar, waiting for you to drag in text, images, URLs, and more.

WriteRoom

WriteRoom is a simple, but powerful app that provides you with a distraction-free writing environment. WriteRoom does one main thing and does it incredibly well: It’s all about writing…

Twitterific

Twitterrific is an exquisite app that enables you to make the most out of your Twitter experience. It has a clean user interface that’s designed to take up little of your precious desktop space.

TinyGrab

TinyGrab is a simple, powerful app that enables you to quickly share screenshots of everything on your Mac.

Hordes of Orcs

Hordes of Orcs is a Tower Defense strategy game where you build walls and towers to defend your village from orcs gone rogue.

And if enough people participate

Mariner Write

Mariner Write is a fast, streamlined word processor that’s useful for everyone… professional writers, educators, students, casual computer users, and everyone in-between. It has a simple, elegant user interface so that you can create beautiful documents the very first time you start using it.

If you ask me most of them are pretty worthless. I guess if you don’t already have a better word processor, then Mariner Write would be nice once it is available, but the others really don’t seem worth the process to even download them. I already have a better twitter client and my the other seem pretty pointless.

But hey thats just me. Let me know what you think.

So the last 2-3 months I have completely falling off the “getting healthy” wagon, but starting last night I am forcing myself to get back on track. With working out, eating better. and tracking calories through the website LiveStrong.com. No I have mentioned LiveStrong in the past, but mostly I just talked about their iPhone app, which I still believe to be the best calorie tracking app out there (even with the bugs it has).

But this post isn’t about the App. I wanna talk more about their site.

As a web designer, I must first say that the layout and browsing of the site is as close to horrible as possible. There’s a lot of things that should take a click or 2 tops that ends up taking 4-5, if not more to get to. But at the same time the site is a huge benefit. Their food database is second to none (in my opinion), they have a lot of duplicates on some things, but usually will have a “verified” image on the one that is accurate.

They allow you to put in your current height, weight and how much you want to lose a week and they will automatically calculate the amount of calories that you are allowed to eat a day to stick to your goal. They also build their entire site around a community this way you can work together with others and have they extra support group. They also have a ton of recipes and what they call “Dares” to try and help get and keep you motivated.

I have had the account for I believe almost a year now and have lost a total of 30lbs (so it does work), but as I mentioned before I haven’t been doing so well the last few months. So, it should be a lot more, but if you are interested and want to join feel free to look me up.

Last Tuesday I headed in the dentist to have a tooth removed, well one tooth turned into two, which I wasn’t really planning on.

The reason for having the teeth removed was from me clinching my teeth while I slept. This is something that, I’m guessing I’ve developed in the last year (for unknown reasons). Well, by adding this annoying habit to my life, I’ve clinched my teeth so much and so hard that I cracked two of my teeth including the roots, which led into infection and the only option of having them removed.

For all those getting worried it was teeth in the back of my mouth so I still have my pretty smile and I’ve purchased a mouth-guard to wear at night to prevent damage to any more teeth.

All I gotta say is I really hope I never have to have any others pulled cause this last week has been filled with pain and this annoying lack of availability to chew anything on the one side of my mouth.

So basically, this post is nothing more then a warning and info that if you do clinch or grind your teeth. Buy a mouth-guard before it’s too late, they are cheap ($20-$30 bucks max) and really not all that annoying to sleep in.

Now for all my nerd friends/followers, I know there have been a ton of these already posted on the internet, but I had a few reason why I wanted to still post my own.

I am just really excited to have one to unbox (even if it’s works and not my own personal one.)

I figure it would give me another post to describe how much I love the Drobo

Because I can.

So some of you may be wondering what in the world a DroboPro is:

The easiest way to explain it, is a device that you can put multiple hard drives in that creates one large drive but remove some of the entire storage space for automatically keeping all your files backed up. So a drive or 2 (in the case of the Pro) can go completely bad and all your files are still safe and sound.

So without any further ado here is the DorboPro unboxing…

I Friday I started moving my office from a crazy large cubical area to a the server room for the company.

The process began by removing the hard-drives from a massive amount of old computer junk. The moving the computers to another location until they can be disposed of properly. The process actually happened fairly quickly and I surprised most of my coworkers with how quickly I was able to move everything. I guess you can never underestimate the motivation for a way to be more excluded from the rest of the office so you can concentrate on work without as many interruptions.

Anyways I also used my iPhone and AutoStitch to take a few photos of the progress. So I hope you enjoy.

Friday – Before I started

Saturday – After a few hours of work (yes i even worked during the weekend to get this done)

Monday – Everything cleared out and ready to move, but have to wait for permission.

Wednesday – Everything moved in and back to working and getting things done.

Overall I actually had a lot of fun getting everything moved around I still have a lot of organizing to do, but overall I think it is all going to turn out to be a great move.

One of my favorite parables in the Bible is the Parable of the Talents (Matt 25:14).

Some of you may be thinking huh, what, and why, right about now, but the truth is that every time I hear this parable, (which is normally during offering) I take a different look at it (which I am sure a lot of you do too).

This story always makes me check myself and the skills (talents) that God has blessed me with. Now sadly, I wasn’t given a silver tongue and my writing abilities, well you know, speak for themselves. But I do believe that God blessed me with the abilities that I do have and this parable always checks me and brings me back to a single thought.

Am I using my talent more for myself or for God.

This thought is what made me want nothing more then to get www.jokesandjesus.com off the ground, but sadly I haven’t been giving it the attention that it deserves lately. And it’s not that I still haven’t been using my talents for God, but I do feel like I can be doing more. And I don’t know about you, but I think God deserves every bit of the best that I can give him.

So my question to you is:

Are you just hiding your talents or are you using them and allowing them to grow, so that you can serve God even more through them?

This blog post is a little different then most, cause usually I post about what I do or like or have tried. This post I really want your opinion on what I should do.

So for months I have been meaning to find a way to backup my wife’s photos to “the cloud” and I’m still not sure what way I really want to go.

Currently I do have a few personal thoughts on how I could go:

I could just upload to flickr (I do have a pro account) and mark all the photos as private. (This is one method I have been contemplating for a while.)

I could go the Mozy or Carbonite route and backup more then just my photos automatically and restore if/when something really bad happens.

I could go the route of Amazon S3 storage (or other like service) where I can either drag and drop or use software for an automatic backdrop.

Also keep in mind that my wife is a professional and hobbyist photographer, so we have at least half a terabyte or more of photos.

So any suggestions?
